My Morning Routine Struggle

Happy Thursday everyone! Before I jump into this post, can I just say how thankful I am that it’s brighter in the mornings now? Does anyone else find it the biggest struggle getting out of bed in the dead of Winter? Especially when it’s cold and dark outside, the absolute last thing on my mind is to drag myself from the bed and get into the car on those mornings, hahaha. (#firstworldproblems, I know!) Today I wanted to get real about my morning routine: how I’ve always wanted to be a morning person, but how that definitely doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon *unless you guys have any amazing tips for me!?*

My mornings currently start at 7 am, when my alarm goes off and I wake up feeling like I haven’t had an ounce of sleep. HA! That was dramatic, but so true sometimes – you know when you just wake up feeling like you didn’t sleep!? I get that depending on how often I’ve been around screens the night before. I know that you’re not meant to scroll before bed, but I can never help myself – in my mind I say “well, I’ve got the yellow screen enabled so it isn’t disturbing my sleep THAT much, right!?” but it always is. Always.

I drag myself from the bed, and go and put my contacts in most mornings. When I’m at work, I find it hard to wear my glasses because they can be quite annoying if I’m running around on a shoot, lifting tripods and setting up shots – they get really itchy and hot on my nose (which I hate! and also didn’t notice how much it annoyed me until I tried living without glasses and had the bliss of no-nose-sweat workdays! *is that too gross?*)

Then, I go downstairs and get some breakfast – depending on the day – right now, my absolute favourite breakfast *yeah, there’s never going to be a blog post that doesn’t include food somewhere hahaha* is Weetabix’s Chocolate Protein one. I love it! I take my morning vitamins while eating it, then have to rush back upstairs to get changed and do my skincare.

This year I’ve really tried to prioritise my skin so I’m incorporating factors into it that I hadn’t before. As well as my standard day cream, I’m using a cleanser to wake my skin up and some undereye cream, because I struggle with dark circles, (like, really dark. Sometimes I think I should just go straight to concealer but this undereye cream from Origins is actually pretty fantastic to help! *Even if by the evening they’re pretty dark again*)

By the time all of this has happened, it’s 7:30 and I need to be in the car on my way to work. The office ‘base’ I work at is an hour from where I live, but in the mornings that can easily stretch depending on traffic – and if I’m on shoot that day, I could be meeting earlier to convoy down, or heading straight to set somewhere else if that’s easier than visiting the office first!

I used to loathe my commute, especially the monotony¬†of it, but now I see it as a great time to relax and think/plan for my blog as I drive. I listen to my favourite music, or a podcast/audiobook depending on my tastes. I binge-listened my way through the entire Harry Potter universe last year solely through drives to work and I can’t even begin to tell you how good that was! It was through the Summer too, so when I was driving home the light would be golden and the breeze warm. Glorious!

I’d love to know what your morning routines look like. It’s so funny how we get ourselves into our own routines, and they’re the things you rely on day in, day out. I always feel a little out of sorts when I’m travelling with work and my routine gets thrown out of whack. Thank-you so much for reading!
