Since I had so much fun putting together my last packing list, What I’m Packing For a Week in Florida, I couldn’t wait to write another. Scott, two of my best friends and I are heading to California for a road trip in a few days and I’ve been so excited about this for so long! You might have seen this blog post I did, detailing the ‘bucket list’ of activities I can’t wait to do while I’m there. Or this one, with the process that led me through booking something as intensive as a road trip (with a whole bunch of stops!).
My packing list for this trip had to vary more than when I visited Florida. The weather is so different between San Francisco and Las Vegas, meaning a mix of heavier and lighter clothes altogether.
I couldn’t start my packing list without talking about what I’m taking as luggage first. I’ve loved this set since I first got it. The colours go together so well (I have it in cream and brown and I’m always getting compliments about it!), and I love the design.
As well as my case, I always try to take a duffel as my carry on for versatility and comfort. I love this Nike duffel because it has separate compartments for shoes, and is both lightweight and really deep. While also packing a backpack (like my Kanken) into my checked baggage. That way, my Kanken can double as my carry on if I over-buy and need to check my duffel as second luggage on the flight home.
It’s also really useful to have a backpack on hand for day-to-day activities. Especially if you’re out from the morning to the evening like we will be!
If you read my last packing list, you’ll know of my love for this hat. This Summer, I picked up another one (although I DIY’d the ribbon detailing to solid black rather than patterned) and can’t wait to wear it while exploring the West Coast. I’ve also included some additional accessories that I’ve been loving recently, like this Daniel Wellington watch.
Tops, Sweaters & Shirts
Deciding what tops to bring has been the hardest packing list decision yet. Since it will be colder in San Francisco, I’m bringing a sweater or two that I can wrap up in – and then a lot of t-shirts that I can layer/style with shirts as the weather takes me.
Driving down the West Coast, it seems as though temperatures will gradually increase all the way into Las Vegas – so I’m presuming that outfits will get more and more basic as the time goes on.
Pants & Shorts
If you’ve been following my Instagram this Summer, you’ll know of my obsession with these shorts. I wanted to push the boat out a bit for this trip, so I’m bringing a good mix of neutral pants that I can mix and match between my outfits. That way my feed won’t be full of the same pair of shorts, and I can bring a little bit of individuality to everything I pair together.
Since time spent outside of the car will be spent exploring, I wanted to make sure that this packing list included lots of comfortable shoes. From the hills of San Francisco, to Santa Monica pier, the streets of Los Angeles and the strip of Las Vegas. Comfort is definitely key for this trip. I also wanted to throw a pair that I could dress up for any more formal evenings we have on the road, which is why I’ve added my favourite pair of tan leather loafers, too.
With the change in weather from San Francisco to Las Vegas, I’m trying to find a nice balance of skincare to bring with me. After recently discovering The Ordinary, I’ve fallen in love with the brand and already have four products that I know I couldn’t travel without. I’m also a big fan of the L’Oreal Revitalift line – and this product, in particular, has SPF 30 already in the moisturising cream.
All in all, these are the items that I can’t wait to take to California/Nevada with me! Thank-you so much for reading my packing list. These posts are so much fun to pull together and a great way to look back at what I packed and needed while exploring different parts of this beautiful world.
I’d love to know if you’ve ever road tripped the West Coast of America, and what your favourite stop was? Before leaving, I feel like I’m going to love San Francisco and Big Sur the most. I’m already excited to share my travels upon returning!
