I think we can all agree that boots are a mans best friend during the cold months. When it’s wet, rainy or blustery, I’m always reaching for a pair. From chelsea, to chukka, desert and duck – today I wanted to share the mens winter boots that are essential to everybody’s wardrobes. These are styles that you’ll get the use out of season on season. And whether you’re shopping for yourself, or picking up a pair for somebody in your life, I’m sharing colourways and styles that will keep the receiver on the top of their trend game.
If you’re new to Mile in My Glasses, I’ve also written about recreating classic mens winter styles. And if you’re in the midst of picking up presents for Christmas, make sure to check out my menswear gift guide.
The Chelsea Boot
Perhaps the most popular of all boots, the chelsea boot comes out every autumn and stays well into spring. Named after its association with Kings Road, a street in Chelsea, London, the boot is more than just a winter choice. Coming in a range of colours, you can pretty much style the chelsea boot with any outfit because of the options available. Whether you’re dressing it up for a night with the family, or dressing it down for a day outside. I always gravitate towards lighter colours of chelsea boots, but you want to keep in mind that winter brings bad weather. And with bad weather, comes mud, puddles and dirt. Which are never fun problems to deal with in lighter shoes. Especially if they’re made of suede.
Although black chelsea boots are stylish, I’d recommend opting for a darker, chocolate-coloured boot instead. Black is a colour most associated with the office, whilst dark brown is more fun for wearing out and about. Plus, both colours are suited to the autumn and winter colour palettes.

The Chukka Boot
A more rugged choice, the chukka boot brings a more hard-waring vibe to any outfit. Best worn in the great outdoors, chukka boots bring a cool aesthetic and looks great in the leather-style of fabrics. Pair this with ripped jeans, an open flannel shirt and an under-tee for a classic look of woodsy meets modern.

The Desert Boot
Originally a variant of chukka boot, the desert is another solid addition to mens winter boots. Usually found in suede, the desert boot brings a more formal edge to the chukka style. Clean cut and quite formal, they’re great to wear dressed up and down – and are perfect for traversing around town in. Similar to the chelsea boots, if you’re picking up a pair in suede you’ll want to avoid the lighter colours (or at least practice caution with them). As they’ll pick up any stains from the roads that you’d encounter through the darker days and longer nights.

The Duck Boot
The most useful choice of mens winter boots, the duck boot is best when it’s miserable outside. When the January rain hits, and the rainclouds last for days – that’s when you’ll be reaching for your duck boots. Water resistant, sealed and lined for comfort, these boots will look great during blustery winter walks. They ooze the country vibe, and are best paired in all your winter layers for those outside journeys where you want to bring the comfort of home with you.
An essential for any man’s wardrobe, a duck boot is a great half-way point between the rainboot and logger boots, usually rising up your calf for security. They don’t require a load of maintenance, and can be very long-lasting if you invest in a pair for your autumn and winter adventures.
