If you looked at my to-do list any time over the past year or two, you would have seen “launch an email list” plastered somewhere on there. Its been the task that I’ve always known I should invest my time and effort into, but also something that I’ve always put off doing. Building an email list was something I thought I’d do later. The magical kind of later that always seems like it’s right around the corner, but never actually arrives. Read: later as in never. Until last week. After seeing enough recommendations about the positives, and why you should crack on and make one, I actually did it. And it was nothing like I expected.
I had dreamt about launching my email list when everything was perfect. I would have a certain % of engagement from my audience, I would have a backlog of creative content to push out and share constantly, essentially I would be thriving. Last week, I was not thriving. But that’s okay, because waiting to feel a certain way – or for a certain scenario that may never happen to come into play, does yourself no favours. Absolutely none.
Today, I wanted to talk about why you should consider building your email list today. Yep, in the next 24 hours. I mean, lets remember, we all have the same amount of hours in the day as Beyonce. You can practically achieve anything.
Done is Better Than Perfect
First, I want to debunk this. This feeling that we set for ourselves, a bar so high that we put off all our big scaries until some questionable day in the future where everything will be “perfect”. This is a limiting belief. Because, truth be told, someday never comes. Heck, tomorrow never comes. All we can deal with is today. Today is what is important.
And with that in mind, you need to remember that absolutely everything we do is a process. Nothing starts perfect. We learn and we grow. Mistakes teach us lessons and those inform our future. If we did everything perfectly first time, we’d never learn and nothing would ever get better. And I don’t know about you, but I want to be constantly improving. Don’t you?
An Email List is a Slow Growth, Not an Explosion
Read as: more times than not, an email list is not going to be an overnight success. What I mean is, growing your email list isn’t going to happen overnight. It’s something you’ll be growing for the foreseeable. Adjusting, strategising and testing. The earlier you start, the more time you’re saving in the future and the more information you can receive from your audience. You can find out who is desperate to learn more from you – what they want to know more about. Areas you can grow your content into, and what you’re not serving.
Truth be told, launching my email list has been one of the most informative things I’ve ever done. I have learned more about my audience since the launch of my list than ever before in my business. And that’s exactly what I wanted to take away from this process.
It’s All in the Strategy
In my mind, there’s no success without strategy. The two go hand in hand like chocolate and caramel (yum!). Crafting an email list strategy is something that serves not only your audience, but you too. Jot down 10 ideas of ways you want to grow your list. Is it through pop-up forms, do you want to offer an incentive? Are you going to custom-design graphics to advertise it on Instagram, are you going to talk about it in a blog post? Strategise the launch, and then what comes after. It will save you so much time in the long run.
If there’s anything I want you to take away from this post, it’s this: just get started. With a checklist-item like an email list, the best way to tackle it is by getting the motor running and jumping onboard. Read your audience, and find out how they best respond to what you’re putting out. After all, if social media disappeared tomorrow, your blog and your email list are the only two links that you actually own.
