Instagram has always been one of my favourite social platforms. I try to keep track of who and what I’m connecting with online, to keep the spaces that I interact with as positive and inspiring as I can. I’m the same with Pinterest, which is my second favourite platform. It’s increasingly important to ensure that what you’re interacting with on a day-to-day basis keeps you inspired, and doesn’t get you bogged down in the world of comparison and negativity. That being said, with any social platform, you need to craft a strategy for how you want to appear and grow with it. Over time, my Instagram strategy has changed drastically. In fact, the speed of which Instagram changes, it feels like my strategy changes along with it every other week.
Today, I wanted to talk about the significant changes that have happened to my Instagram strategy over the past year. This has gone from a very heavy-handed routine, where I stressed and focused on numbers to a, frankly, unhealthy degree. To now, which is a lot different.
Embrace What Makes You Unique
The shining quality about Instagram is that you can craft your profile into anything you want it to be. There’s so much diversity through the platform that it’s almost magical. My #1 focus for my new Instagram strategy is to constantly be sharing what makes me unique. How do I stand out? How am I different from anybody else? Is it in my passions, or where I live, or how I live my life? Through sharing these little nuggets, nuggets that perhaps you find mundane, you share a unique perspective on life that people who culturally and geographically don’t live in the same way as you, get to see.
Share What You Love Online
And whilst you’re sharing your life, make sure to be sharing what genuinely makes you excited. What are your passions, your hobbies and your loves? People connect so deeply with others when they find something to relate to each other with. And there’s always people out there who love the same things as you. Through sharing things that you love, you’re giving your audience extra opportunities to relate and connect with you. So share as much as you can!
Focus on the Story You Want to Tell
Everything online is a story. Every blog post, every social update and every Instagram upload. See them as much. What is the story that you want to tell? Craft it and tell it how you want! When I stumble across an Instagram profile and I can see what they’re saying throughout, it makes me fall in love with it a lot quicker. And it’s a lot easier to connect with, too. Ask yourself with every upload, what’s the story I’m telling here? How is this post connecting me deeper to my friends and followers online? And then post as much.
Done Beats Perfect, Every Time
And finally, with any strategy it’s easy to get wrapped up in yourself and stress about everything being perfect. Only wanting to post the perfect images, only wanting to put anything live once it’s perfect. Reject that notion. Done is so much better than perfect. This is a lesson that I’m still trying to learn myself, but I know how important it is. Getting wrapped up in perfection is only going to slow down your content creation and keep your inspiration on hold. Let yourself experiment, have fun and create things that you love. Whether they’re perfect or not. After all, everything is a journey.
This is the Instagram strategy that I want to take forward on the social platform from here on out. A more laid back approach, but one that’s equally as important for crafting any sort of brand or presence online. I’d love to know your thoughts on these points, and if you have an Instagram strategy too?
